Carry-on

What can/can't I take in my carry-on?

The carry-on can be surprisingly large for most airlines. They cannot exceed 22"x 14"x 9", but can be 40 pounds. Considering that your checked bag cannot exceed 50 pounds, that's a pretty good deal. Not to mention the fact that they are free for most airlines, as well!

I did mention before that your carry-on should have a couple of outfits that can be worn immediately upon arrival, just in case your suitcase doesn't make it to your final destination with you. Of course, we can only hope that it does!

According to the TSA website, there is a 3-1-1 rule when it comes to liquids in your carry-on. When it doubt, just check it, but if you would like to have some toothpaste and/or shampoo with you just in case, here are the rules to follow:
  • 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less (by volume) -- 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag --1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin.
You can also take your laptop with you on the plane. There are rules for the type of laptop bags you can have, but if you're like me, you'll just put it in your carry-on luggage. For those rules, click on this link: TSA laptop rules!

Where can I weigh my luggage?

I am going to answer this question because it was one I was asking myself today. In Miami, supermarkets have large scales for weight-conscious citizens of Miami, but unfortunately, Charlotte doesn't have this. Therefore, I was trying to figure out where I could go. My first thought was a gym, but then my mother read this tip online:

If you have a scale at home, which most people do, you can first weigh yourself and write the number down. Then, weigh yourself again holding your luggage. Subtract the second weight from the first and you'll have the weight of your luggage. It's as simple as that!

My carry-on (above) is the exact measurement permitted by TSA. If you're like me, you want something that will make a statement. This bright purple bag caught my eye from the moment I saw it at TJ Maxx and I had to take it home with me.

Most websites will suggest smaller carry-on luggage, like a bookbag or small duffel. But, for my specific situation, I had to go with the biggest bag permitted because I can only take one suitcase for four months in a country that is extremely fashion-conscious.

Carry-on luggage is great for carrying not only some outfits for the first few days, but for having important documentation with you.

Important tip: make copies of your passport and flying itinerary. Give one copy of each to a trusted family member and keep one copy with you in your carry-on. This can also be done with prescriptions and any other important documentation you'd like to have back-ups for when going abroad. This is a crucial step that should be taken before your adventure begins!

18 days until departure!
